I have been a full time painter and illustrator since 1993. The path to my art career has been an interesting if circuitous one. My background and experience includes the practice of veterinary medicine as an equine surgeon for 12 years before turning to illustration and painting as a livelihood. The Science Illustration program at the University of California, Santa Cruz acted as a bridge joining science and art in my life.

When I'm not in the studio, I spend as much time as possible gathering artistic inspiration on wilderness adventures. I've enjoyed safaris in Africa, kayaking the Queen Charlotte Islands and many wonderful experiences in between. Lifelong study of animals and the natural world serves both to inform and to inspire my work. I paint in a representational style using a variety of mediums from traditional to contemporary.

It is inspiring just being in Fernwood, my studio located in a forested 21 acres on the Key Peninsula in Washington state. As much as I enjoyed the creativity of building my home and studio, it's the land that provides me with the most inspiration. The old growth cedar down by the creek, the profusion of fern and moss, the sound of birds, frogs and wind in the trees. A mini rain forest sanctuary. FernWood will continue to provide me with a more physical creative outlet for years to come, a great complement to the perfect north light of the studio workspace.
